BRUK DOCS
A UK-Brazil collaboration of filmmakers and researchers using film to create dialogue on social issues and support social action through filmmaking
This website outlines our documentary film projects, describes our team and main objectives; describes what we want to achieve as a whole; and in each page explains what we are looking for in terms realising the project.
The core focus of our films is to discuss neglected issues in relation to the peripheral and marginalised areas of society in Brazil. The central themes are security, violence, class, inequality, and the ways in which ordinary people are impacted by these factors.
The filmmakers in the team have ten years experience working in favelas in Brazil, in particular in Rocinha in Rio. The researchers from the area of sociology and anthropology in the team have twenty years experience researching, writing and teaching about important and complex issues in relation to these themes.
The filmmakers and researchers have come together because of our shared belief that in order to better understand the key issues of our areas and create worthwhile outputs, it is crucial to spend time in the communities and take the time to listen to and collaborate with people who are affected by these issues in their daily lives. Only by doing this (though not discounting other forms of research) can we hope to achieve furthering our own knowledge and then have the potential to create meaningful content for others to get a sense of our perspectives through our work.
With all the films we produce, the idea is for them to be seen across all social levels and different platforms, and to bring people together to discuss challenges and solutions. In Brazil, we already have strong networks within the higher education sector and secondary level, as well as in areas of activism and human rights. The films will be designed to be used within this sector for use within discussion topics.
